Basketball Recap: Cabell Midland Falls Despite Big Games from Samuel Phillips and Ayden Spence

Cabell Midland was the 70-55 winner over Woodrow Wilson when they last played one another back in December of 2021, but their luck changed this time around. The Cabell Midland Knights received a blow on Saturday as they fell 73-57 to the Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles. While losing is never fun, the Knights can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' West Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 44th in West Virginia, while the Flying Eagles are ranked fifth in West Virginia).

Despite the loss, Cabell Midland had strong showings from Ayden Spence, who posted 16 points and three steals, and Samuel Phillips, who earned 19 points and six rebounds. The dominant performance gave Spence a new career-high in points. Another player making a difference was Aidan Ray, who put up nine points and three steals.

It was another big night for Jaylon Walton, who went 11-for-12 to rack up 27 points and seven boards for Woodrow Wilson. The contest was Walton's fourth in a row with at least 17 points. Lucas Raney also deserves some recognition as he grabbed his first steal of the season.

This is the second loss in a row for Cabell Midland and nudges their season record down to 9-10. As for Woodrow Wilson, their win was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 13-3.

Cabell Midland wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 74-69 victory against Winfield on the 24th. As for Woodrow Wilson, they have also already played their next matchup, a 96-44 win against Princeton on the 25th.
