Baseball Recap: Somerset Comes Up Short

Somerset fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Elizabethtown on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 7-6. The loss continues a trend for the Briar Jumpers in their meetings with the Panthers: they've now lost three in a row.

Somerset saw eight different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Isaiah Lewis, who went 2-for-4 with eight stolen bases and two runs. Lewis is becoming a predictor of the Briar Jumpers' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 5-11 when he doesn't). Kole Grundy was another, going 2-for-5 with one run and one double.

Somerset's defeat dropped their record down to 7-12. As for Elizabethtown, they pushed their record up to 12-5 with the win, which was their seventh straight at home.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Somerset will challenge Pulaski County at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Elizabethtown, they will take on Eastern at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Panthers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Eagles have averaged an impressive 6.9 runs per game this season.
