Basketball Recap: Grand Valley Comes Up Short

Grand Valley lost against Coal Ridge back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Grand Valley Cardinals fell 65-57 to the Coal Ridge Titans. While losing is never fun, the Cardinals can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 233rd, while the Titans are ranked 79th).

Despite the loss, Grand Valley still got an impressive performance from Trey Teter, who almost dropped a double-double on 14 points and nine boards. Teter continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Jason Diaz also deserves some recognition as he posted his first assist of the season.

Even though they lost, Grand Valley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive boards in five consecutive matchups.

Ben Simons continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Coal Ridge, dropping a double-double on 21 points and 11 rebounds. Simons has been hot recently, having posted eight or more boards the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Diego Gamez, who posted 14 points and three steals.

Grand Valley's defeat dropped their record down to 4-9. As for Coal Ridge, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season.

Grand Valley will square off against Cedaredge at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Grand Valley is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 51.1 points per game this season. Coal Ridge has already played their next contest, a 62-55 victory against Glenwood Springs on the 23rd.
