Football Recap: Mendota Takes a Loss

After flying high against Avenal last Friday, Mendota came back down to earth. The Aztecs came up short against the Firebaugh Eagles on Friday, falling 35-14. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Although Mendota took the loss, they still got scores from Rodney Vargas and Anthony Trinidad.

Firebaugh's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Leonardo Perez led the charge by throwing for 170 yards and five touchdowns, while also rushing for 110 yards on only ten carries. Those 110 rushing yards gave Perez a new career-high. Firebaugh's leading receiver Dominic Barajas was Perez's top target yet again, picking up 125 receiving yards and three TDs.

Mendota's loss dropped their record down to 5-5. As for Firebaugh, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-4 record this season.

Mendota has already played their next matchup, a 21-14 victory against Lindsay on the 7th. As for Firebaugh, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 49-0 win against Yosemite on the 7th.
