Baseball Recap: Gunnar Long's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Mark Twain over North Callaway

Mark Twain extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 13 on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 0-12 in the process. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 10-0 to the North Callaway Thunderbirds, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Tigers were not able to make up for their defeat to the Thunderbirds from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.

Mark Twain saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gunnar Long, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base.

As for North Callaway, their victory was their seventh straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-1. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.7 runs over those games.

On North Callaway's side, the team relied heavily on Keaton Bell, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most hits Bell has posted since back in May of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Coltyn O'Neal, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases, two runs, and one double.

Looking ahead, Mark Twain will venture away from home to square off against Wellsville-Middletown at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for North Callaway, they will challenge Montgomery County at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Wildcats' pitching crew has only allowed 3.1 runs per game this season, so the Thunderbirds' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
