Preview: Vernon Yellowjackets vs. Cottondale Hornets
Vernon has enjoyed the comforts of home their last three games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will square off against The Cottondale Hornets at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Last Friday, Vernon was able to grind out a solid win over Jefferson County, taking the game 43-30.
Ryan Scott went supernova for Vernon, rushing for 196 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 7.8 yards per carry, and also throwing for 41 yards and two touchdowns. Caden Hammack and his 92 yards on the ground were also a key factor in Vernon's victory.
Meanwhile, Cottondale put the finishing touches on their fifth blowout victory of the season on Friday. They breezed by Pataula Charter Academy at home to the tune of 44-6. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 38-0.
Cottondale got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jocarian Garrett out in front who rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns on only 13 carries. Garrett hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for eight straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Cameron Odom, who rushed for 70 yards and two touchdowns on only eight carries.
Vernon's victory bumped their record up to 4-4. As for Cottondale, the victory was the fourth in a row for they, bringing their record for this year to 5-3.
Vernon was taken down by Cottondale 64-22 when the teams last played back in October of 2022. Can Vernon avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
