Drew Brees, Matthew Stafford and Andrew Luck, that's just among the current lot. Y.A. Tittle, Bobby Layne and Don Meredith, that's old school.

None of them threw more touchdown passes in a single season in the state of Texas than Nick Gerber.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Levelland (Texas) senior threw six touchdown passes in a 82-73 win over Decatur on Friday to give him 73 on the season. He passed the record of 71 set by Shelton Eppler of Nevasota in 2014.

Gerber entered the game 264 of 400 for 4,534 yards and just four interceptions. On Friday, according to Twitter reports, he threw for 459 as the Lobos (9-3) moved into 4A-D1 third round to face Andrews.

The 73 touchdown passes in a season ranks eighth nationally all-time. The leaders are current University of Washington quarterback and Heisman candidate Jake Browning, who threw for 91 for Folsom (Calif.) in 2014. He shares that record with Corey Robinson of Paducah (Ky.) who threw for 91 in 2007.

Gerber is just five TD passes from moving into third all-time.
