Sylvia Fowles among greatest high school girls basketball players from Florida

Four-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year had jersey retired by Minnesota Lynx upon 2022 retirement.

To get a good idea who might be the greatest high school girls basketball players in Florida history, you won't find many better than Sylvia Fowles of Gulliver Prep (Miami). The four-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year has also been named to the All-Defensive Team 11 times in her pro career. 

Fowles headlines the all-time starting five for the Sunshine State as chosen by MaxPreps.

Florida All-Time Starting Five

Sylvia Fowles, Gulliver Prep (Miami), 2004
High School:
Fowles led Edison (Miami) to a pair of state championships before transferring to Gulliver Prep, where she led that team to a state title. Fowles earned McDonald's All American honors and WBCA All-American recognition as a senior.
College: The SEC Player of the Year in 2008, Fowles finished her career as the SEC's all-time career rebounding leader.
Professional: An eight-time WNBA All-Star, Fowles won two league titles and was twice named the Finals MVP.

Michelle Snow, Pensacola, 1998
High School: Named Miss Florida Basketball in 1998, Snow was also a McDonald's All American and a WBCA All-American.
College: Averaged 11 points per game in college at Tennessee. She was also one of the first college women's basketball player to dunk a basketball during a game.
Professional: Playing 15 years in the WNBA and overseas, Snow was named Rookie of the Year and made two WNBA All-Star games.



Tari Phillips, Edgewater (Orlando), 1986
High School: The Orange Sentinel's Player of the Year in 1986, Phillips averaged 24 points per game with 16 rebounds.
College: Phillips played her first two seasons at Georgia and helped the Bulldogs reach the NCAA finals two straight years.
Professional: The eighth overall pick in the WNBA draft, Phillips played eight seasons in the league and was a four-time WNBA All-Star.

Marie Ferdinand, Edison (Miami), 1997
High School: Miss Florida Basketball in 1995, she averaged 24 points per game as a senior.
College: Averaged 13 points per game for her career at LSU, but averaged 21 points a game as a senior for the Tigers.
Professional: Drafted No. 8 overall in the 2001 draft, Ferdinand played 10 seasons in the league and was a three-time WNBA All-Star.

Erlana Larkins, Benjamin (Palm Beach Gardens), 2004
High School: One of the most decorated players in Florida high school history, she was a two-time state player of the year, won four state championships, was a McDonald's All American and scored over 3,000 career points.
College: Larkins earned All-ACC honors three times and was the ACC Tournament MVP in 2008. She also earned All-American honors as a senior.
Professional: The 14th overall pick of the 2008 WNBA Draft, she played 10 seasons and was a league champion in 2012.
