Baseball Game Preview: Point Pleasant Boro Panthers vs. Liberty Lions

Point Pleasant Boro hasn't had much luck against Liberty recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Panthers will venture away from home to face off against the Lions at 10:00 a.m. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

On Monday, Point Pleasant Boro was able to grind out a solid victory over St. Rose, taking the game 8-4. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Panthers.

John Loizos spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on six hits and racked up 12 Ks. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Nick Carmino, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Point Pleasant Boro's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-5 when he doesn't). Jake Clayton also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Meanwhile, Liberty posted their closest win since May 21, 2024 on Tuesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 11-10 victory over Toms River North.

Liberty's win was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 3-6. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Point Pleasant Boro, their record is now 4-5.

Point Pleasant Boro skirted past Liberty 3-2 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Panthers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
