Flag Football Recap: Thornton Comes Up Short Despite Olivia Mateo's Big Defensive Game

If Thornton was riding high fresh off their 39-6 takedown of Gateway on Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Trojans fell 34-25 to the Horizon Hawks on Saturday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Trojans of the 18-0 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in September of 2024.

Although Thornton took the loss, they still got scores from Zhane Moore, Olivia Mateo, Dayanis Holguin, and Phoenix Manchego.

Thornton didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Mateo, Holguin, and Manchego picked up one apiece. Mateo got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Thornton has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-6 record this season. As for Horizon, they pushed their record up to 5-4 with the win, which was their third straight at home.

Thornton didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 26-0 victory against Aurora Central on the 24th. As for Horizon, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, a 20-6 win against Eagle Ridge Academy on the 24th.
