Softball Recap: Thursday's Defeat Ends Capitan's Winning Streak

Capitan dropped their record down to 8-5 on Thursday, which also ended the team's seven-game streak of wins. They came up short against the Lordsburg Mavericks, falling 11-5. The Tigers were not able to make up for their loss to the Mavericks from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.

Faith Roper was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out ten over 5.1 innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Capitan saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kailei Smith, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one triple. Another was Lulu Emerson-Betti, who went 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

As for Lordsburg, they pushed their record up to 11-2 with the victory, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 10 runs.

On Lordsburg's side, the team relied heavily on Sofiya Jemente, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. That's the most RBI Jemente has posted over her last seven matches. Natalie Guerrero was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Capitan wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 7-1 defeat against Mesilla Valley Christian School on the 26th. As for Lordsburg, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 17-0 win against Mescalero Apache on the 26th.
