League recap: Marist tops Springfield to extend winning streak

5A Midwestern recap Oct. 23, 2012

Marist extended the longest winning streak in 5A Midwestern this week by beating Springfield, 35-14. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.

Churchill's dynamic duo of Mitch Reese and Keidren Johnson proved tough for North Eugene to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Reese threw for 193 yards and one touchdown and Johnson had 115 yards receiving. Mike Monroy helped Churchill's passing attack out by catching four balls for 34 yards.

Austin Baird was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 41 carries, he ran for 394 yards as Marist beat the Highlanders. Teammate Andrew Park added to the ground attack by rushing for 50 yards.

Riley Lucier-McCool made the biggest impact on defense this week as North Eugene fell to Churchill. The 6-foot-1 senior pulled down one interception.

Frank Geske's team's Kamerun Smith and Josh Harper have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Smith has thrown for 1777 yards this season, while Harper, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 35 catches for 630 yards. Samuel Aguirre from Willamette leads the league in rushing with 806 yards.

A big matchup in 5A Midwestern this week will be when the Millers take on Darrell Mehl's team. At the moment, Springfield is in second, while the Lancers are in third.

Ashland led the league in scoring this week after putting up 50 points on the Wolverines.
