Baseball Recap: Mayfield Comes Up Short

Mayfield extended their losing streak to eight on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 4-14 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 6-5 heartbreaker at the hands of the Chardon Hilltoppers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Hilltoppers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 9-8 on Tuesday.

AJ Rogers, Jr spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered four earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Charlie Brunello was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Ethan Claflin, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

As for Chardon, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 11-9. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 3.25 runs across that stretch.

On Chardon's side, Stone Fawcett was incredible, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two doubles gave Fawcett a new career-high.

Looking ahead, Mayfield will look to defend their home field on Friday against Aurora at 5:00 p.m. Chardon has already played their next game (against Brush), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
