MaxPreps Midwest Top 25 high school boys basketball rankings

Top-ranked St. Edward has tumbled to 10th in the rankings, and Curie is in the drivers' seat. Curie could have a huge matchup with Whitney Young coming up, so these rankings certainly are subject to change.


1. (Last week 2) Curie (Chicago), 22-1
The Condors took over the No. 1 ranking by defeating four-time Class 4A defending state champion Simeon (Chicago) 71-64 in the quarterfinals of the Chicago Public League playoffs. Superstar Cliff Alexander was held to 16 points, but sophomore Devin Gage stepped up big-time with 13 points.
Next: Wednesday vs. Hyde Park (Chicago) in the semifinals at Chicago State.

2. (3) Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati), 19-1
Senior guard Grant Benzinger averaged 23.5 points during victories over Roger Bacon (Cincinnati) 59-48 and St. Xavier (Cincinnati) 63-33.
Next: Friday vs. Ross (Hamilton, Ohio) in the Division I sectional opener at Lakota West.

4. (10) Muskegon (Mich.), 17-0
Six-foot-9 junior Deyonta Davis had a monster game with 17 points, 27 rebounds and 16 blocks during a 68-59 victory over Class C No. 1-ranked Mt. Clemens. Senior guard Deshaun Thrower also had a triple-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Thrower had 16 points and Davis had 10 blocks before a standing-room crowd as the Big Reds beat Mona Shores (Muskegon) 69-39.

6. (6) Apple Valley (Minn.), 23-1
Senior guard Tyus Jones averaged 24.5 points and 12 assists during victories over Burnsville (Minn.) 100-63 and Jefferson (Bloomington, Minn.) 77-63 as the Eagles' winning streak reached 18 games.

9. (9) Marian Catholic (Chicago Heights, Ill.), 21-2
Standout guard Tyler Ulis averaged 20 points and seven assists as the Spartans defeated Providence Catholic (New Lenox) 52-40 and St. Patrick (Chicago) 58-50.

10. (1) St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio), 17-2
Previously ranked No. 1, the Eagles were grounded by Shaker Heights (Ohio), 53-50, ending a 12-game winning streak. They played without 6-9 sophomore star Derek Funderburk, who broke his foot in practice and is out for the year. They rebounded by beating Central Catholic (Cleveland) 68-64 behind 18 points each by Kipper Nichols and Malcolm Walters. Next: Thursday at Villa Angela-St. Joseph (Cleveland).

11. (11) Brookfield Central (Wis.), 20-0
The High-flying Lancers posted three victories last week. Brad Newman had 26 points, Riley LaChance 23 points and Elijah Goodman 15 rebounds during an 88-59 victory over West Allis Central. LaChance had 23 points during a 70-44 win against Marquette (Milwaukee).

12. (13) Whitney Young (Chicago), 20-5
The Dolphins defeated defending Class 3A state champion Morgan Park (Chicago) 72-62 during the quarterfinals of the Chicago Public League playoffs. Senior guard Miles Reynolds scored 26 points despite suffering an eye injury in the third quarter and Jahlil Okafor added 19 points to go with 12 rebounds.

13. (15) Carmel (Ind.), 16-1
Junior sharpshooter Ryan Cline scored 18 points - 14 in the fourth quarter - as the Greyhounds nipped talented Hamilton Southeastern (Fishers, Ind.) 55-54. Zach McRoberts scored 16 points and Cline had 15 during a 46-26 win against North (Terre Haute, Ind.).

14. (14) Greensburg (Ind.), 18-1
Senior point guard Bryant McIntosh dished out a school-record 15 assists and Sean Sellers scored 27 points as the Pirates routed Franklin County (Brookville, Ind.) 79-27.

15. (16) Zanesville (Ohio), 21-0
The Blue Devils, with four football players in the starting lineup, posted three wins last week. J.t. McFarland had the highest-scoring game with 18 points during a 73-59 victory over Westerville North, while Malik Bocook added 17 points and 12 rebounds.

16. (21) King (Milwaukee), 19-1
Jemell Posey scored 24 points during a 71-61 victory over Riverside (Milwaukee) as the team's winning streak reached 18 games. Chris Howell, a 6-9 senior, had 21 points and 12 rebounds during a 66-39 win against Washington (Milwaukee). Next: Tuesday vs. Hamilton (Milwaukee).

17. (12) Chaminade (St. Louis), 19-2
The Red Devils were upset by McCluer North (Florissant, Mo.) 70-68 - snapping a 16-game winning streak - despite 33 points by 6-9 sophomore Jayson Tatum.

18. (18) Pershing (Detroit), 17-2
Justin Tillman scored 27 points during an 82-68 victory over Douglass (Detroit) in the semifinals of the Public School League playoffs. Tillman had 21 points and 13 rebounds in a 72-68 quarterfinal win against Osborn (Detroit).

19. (19) Hickman (Columbia, Mo.), 20-2
Junior Jimmy Whitt averaged 24 points during victories over Jefferson City (Mo.) 69-68 in overtime and Helias (Jefferson City, Mo.) 68-52.

The Rams defeated Hempstead (Dubuque) 67-37 with a 34-0 run in the first half and Iowa City (Iowa) 51-46 behind 20 points by Seth Bonifas.

Khyrii Thomas averaged 19.5 points and nine rebounds during wins against Bellevue East (Neb.) 65-45 and Omaha North 76-59.
