Philomath barely beat Newport the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Warriors blew past the Cubs 16-1 on Wednesday. The result was nothing new for the Warriors, who have now won eight matches by six runs or more so far this season.
Hailey Smith made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits (and not a single walk). Smith was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Libby Kramer, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaylie Kohler, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Philomath always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .613. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Newport only posted an OBP of .353.
Philomath moved to 10-11 with that win, which also ended their three-game losing streak. As for Newport, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost 11 of their last 12 games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-18 record this season.
Philomath will face off against North Marion at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Newport, they will take on Cascade at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
