Basketball Recap: Drew Irwin's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Evangelical Christian over Canterbury

Evangelical Christian easily dispatched Southwest Florida Christian last Tuesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Evangelical Christian Sentinels fell just short of the Canterbury Cougars by a score of 65-62 on Friday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Sentinels have suffered since January 3rd.

Evangelical Christian's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Drew Irwin, who posted 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of David Morris, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 13 boards.

Even though they lost, Evangelical Christian smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in four consecutive matchups.

Canterbury had a senior duo take command as Collin Meagher made all 6 shots he took from beyond the arc to post 25 points and six rebounds and Kyle Scharlau went 7 for 12 en route to 15 points in addition to seven assists and four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Meagher has scored all season. Gabriel Dahan was another key player, putting up three points along with nine assists and three steals.

Evangelical Christian's defeat dropped their record down to 11-11. As for Canterbury, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight contests, which provided a massive bump to their 8-13 record this season.

Evangelical Christian wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 55-53 win against Naples on the 25th. As for Canterbury, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 69-63 loss against Riverdale on the 27th.
