Softball Game Preview: Wheelersburg Pirates vs. Wellston Golden Rockets

The Wheelersburg Pirates will challenge the Wellston Golden Rockets at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Wheelersburg is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.

Wheelersburg is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Wednesday. They came out on top against Piketon by a score of 6-1.

Meanwhile, Wellston got themselves on the board against Tuscarawas Valley on Wednesday, but Tuscarawas Valley never followed suit. They were the clear victors by an 11-0 margin over the Trojans. Considering the Golden Rockets have won 16 matchups by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Hannah Potts made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in 16 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one run, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lyla Pittenger, who went 4-for-5 with eight RBI, two doubles, and one run. Those eight RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Maddie Childers, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one run.

Wellston kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Tuscarawas Valley only managed three hits.

Wellston is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 21-3 record this season. As for Wheelersburg, their victory bumped their record up to 25-0.

Wheelersburg beat Wellston 9-6 when the teams last played back in May of 2023. Do the Pirates have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Golden Rockets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
