The Jac-Cen-Del Eagles will square off against the North Decatur Chargers at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Jac-Cen-Del is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.
Jac-Cen-Del let New Washington stack four runs on them in the fifth inning on Friday but luckily Jac-Cen-Del prevailed anyway. The Eagles had just enough and edged out the Mustangs 5-4. The victory continues a trend for the Eagles in their matchups with the Mustangs: they've now won eight in a row.
Blake Wagner spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on five hits and racked up eight Ks.
At the plate, Jac-Cen-Del's win was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Neil Sullivan, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs. That's the most stolen bases Sullivan has posted since back in May of 2024. Another was Sam Johnson, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for North Decatur, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They walked away with a 4-1 victory over South Decatur on Saturday.
Matthew Fields was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one double. He has become a key player for North Decatur: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 5-9 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Grayson Downey, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
North Decatur has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-9 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Jac-Cen-Del, their victory bumped their record up to 12-8.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Jac-Cen-Del has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like North Decatur struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Jac-Cen-Del took their win against North Decatur when the teams last played back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 20-5 score. Will the Eagles repeat their success, or do the Chargers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
