Basketball Recap: Socorro Falls Despite Big Games from Ariana Crespin and Jazmine Alvarado

Socorro was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They fell 44-32 to the Hot Springs Tigers. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Tigers this season, with their most recent loss being a 53-26 defeat last Tuesday.

Socorro's loss came despite strong showings from Jazmine Alvarado and Ariana Crespin. Alvarado went 7-for-16 to rack up 19 points in addition to six rebounds and six steals, while Crespin posted nine points along with seven boards and five steals. Alvarado has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last eight times she's played.

Even though they lost, Socorro smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive rebound total in four consecutive matchups.

Andrea Luna had an outrageously good game for Hot Springs as she dropped a double-double with ten points and 20 rebounds. Luna is becoming a predictor of Hot Springs' success: when she posts at least ten boards the team is 6-3 (and 5-12 when she doesn't). Another player making a difference was Taylor Littleton, who scored 13 points along with seven rebounds and seven steals.

Socorro's loss dropped their record down to 3-22. As for Hot Springs, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-15.

Socorro does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Hot Springs, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 57-46 defeat against Cobre on the 28th.
