Baseball Recap: Princeton's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Friday

Princeton dropped their record down to 17-4 on Friday, which also ended the team's five-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Mt. Vernon Wildcats by a score of 4-3. The Tigers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wildcats apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

Princeton saw eight different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ryne Wilhite, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one stolen base and one run. David Miller was another, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

As for Mt. Vernon, with the victory, they broke their 12-game losing streak and moved their record to 2-12. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted against Princeton since April 23, 2019.

On Mt. Vernon's side, they got a great performance from Mason Dye as he tossed 6.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. The dominant performance also gave Dye a new career-high in strikeouts (three).

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Luke Weintraut, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one double. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season.

Looking ahead, Princeton will square off against Boonville at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Mt. Vernon, they have already played their next contest, an 11-1 victory against Wood Memorial on the 10th.
