Northeast high school coaches select most overlooked 2021 football recruits

By Staff Report Apr 21, 2020, 1:00pm

Eleven running backs, 10 linebackers head top under-recruited players worthy of more college attention.

Video: Ray Melnikoff highlights
Watch the Lackawanna Trail running back plow over tacklers in 2019.

In the winter of 2019, MaxPreps reached out to high school coaches nationwide to find 100 of the most under-recruited players in the country. The response was well received.

With Class of 2021 players unable to attend showcases or spring football due to COVID-19 restrictions, we decided to move up this year's survey. The response was enormous.

In less than a week, more than 500 surveys were returned, highlighting why these players, almost all with little or no college attention, would help any FBS, FCS, Division II or Division III program.

We have broken the responses into regions, starting today with the Northeast, which includes high school players from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Here are Class of 2021 players whose coaches think should be on someone's radar, including position, recommended college level, film and comments.

Recommended college level: FBS
Accolades: Numbers: 3.9 GPA, First team, All-Conference QB. Stats: 147/274 2,462 yards, 30 TDs, 187 pass attempts without an INT.

High school coach: Shawn Liotta — Big-time under radar pro-style QB. First year as starter in 2019. Shattered all school passing records. Elite arm strength and accuracy. Elite 11 invite, was set to blow up on the summer camp circuits prior Coronavirus shutdown. Excellent student (3.9 GPA), leader, efficient in operating a sophisticated pass-oriented offense here at Burrell. Been coaching for 22 years at the high school, college and professional levels and this young man's arm talent, accuracy, awareness and poise are as good as any I have seen. Major sleeper right now, who as I said would have really blown up on the recruiting radar after attending the camp circuit this spring.

In two quarters of a live scrimmage and the two quarters of the first game, Sean had over 400 yards passing, five TD passes, and two rushing TDs. He would have been a dominate player in the region as a junior. He has healed nicely and will be ready for Week 1 of 2020 as a senior. He scored 22 times on 123 carries, and, frankly, there were multiple games that we pulled him out after a handful of carries because of the score. High school coach: Pat Lamusta — Awesome athlete and natural receiver. His route-running and ball-tracking ability is impressive. Competitive and also does very well in the classroom. Incoming captain for the 2020 season. Flying under the radar in the recruiting world because he is coming from a smaller division and a multi-sport athlete, so he cannot attend all the off-season showcases and combines. Recommended college level: FCS
Accolades: All-Evergreen League, All-New England (HM). Stats: 303 yards receiving, 15.2 yards per catch, four TDs.
Game film: Video
High school coach: Tim Caryl-Klika — Would have been No. 1 threat on any other team in our league. He had a FCS committed player Joey Corcoran (UNH) on the field at the same time as a WR and had the NH Gatorade Player of the Year at RB in Malcolm Bussey so opportunities were limited. Austin made sure to take advantage of every chance he got. He is a playmaker that is clutch under pressure and shines when the spotlight is on him. He will be our featured WR this upcoming season. He has the speed, quickness and skills to play at a high level.

He returns kicks, plays running back, slot, X, and Wildcat QB on offense. He's a great cover man, tackler and ball hawk on defense who can line up at safety or corner (probably not a corner at the next level). Loves football more than anything, and having played at FCS-level myself, I know he can play with those guys.
