Baseball Recap: Sandy Valley Comes Up Short

Sandy Valley extended their losing streak to eight on Friday, dropping them down to 2-8. They lost 14-0 to the Laughlin Cougars. The game marked the first time this season in which the Sidewinders were not able to get on the board.

As for Laughlin, their victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 9-6. The result was nothing new for the Cougars, who have now won six contests by six runs or more so far this season.

For Laughlin's part, Chris Webb III was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Those seven strikeouts gave Webb III a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with six stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs.

In other batting news, Zeus Sanchez was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, one stolen base, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Laughlin's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 6-2 (and 3-4 when he doesn't). Gavin Davis was another key player, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Sandy Valley will challenge Liberty Baptist Academy at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Sidewinders will need to watch out since the Eagles have now posted at least ten runs in their last five games. As for Laughlin, they are taking a road trip to take on Indian Springs at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cougars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Thunderbirds have averaged an impressive 9.9 runs per game this season.
