Smithson Valley won the last time they faced Wagner and Berkley Bates did her part to make sure it happened again. The Rangers were the clear victors by a 3-0 margin over the Thunderbirds on Tuesday with plenty of help from Bates, who had 22 digs and six assists. She is on a roll when it comes to digs, as she's now had 12 or more in each of the last 14 games she's played.
Not only was the match a shutout, it was a big one: Smithson Valley took every set by at least 16 points. The match finished with set scores of 25-9, 25-6, 25-9.
Smithson Valley's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Madison Moody led the charge by getting seven digs and four aces. That's the most aces Moody has posted since back in September. Another player making a difference was Caitlyn Ortiz, who had seven digs and two aces.
Meanwhile, Tivy waltzed into their matchup on Tuesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They blew past the Patriots 3-0.
The 3-0 score doesn't show just how dominant Tivy was: they took every set by at least 11 points. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-14, 25-12, 25-10.
Smithson Valley better keep an eye on Lauren Holland. She was instrumental in Tivy's win, getting eight digs and three aces. Adelyn Kincaid also deserves some recognition as she had her first blocks of the season.
Smithson Valley's victory bumped their record up to 26-14. As for Tivy, their win bumped their record up to 21-19.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's contest: Smithson Valley has really dialed in their serving this season, having averaged 4.2 aces per game. However, it's not like Tivy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 4.9 aces. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
