Basketball Game Preview: Western Guilford Hornets vs. Page Pirates

The Western Guilford Hornets will challenge the Page Pirates at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Western Guilford is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak.

Western Guilford is headed into the contest out to prove that what happened against West Forsyth on Wednesday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Western Guilford was dealt a 70-29 defeat at the hands of West Forsyth. The game marked the Hornets' lowest-scoring match so far this season.

Despite the loss, Western Guilford had strong showings from Uche Okeke, who posted six points and six rebounds, and Leila Henderson, who put up ten points. That was a full 34.5% of Western Guilford's points, marking the seventh time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Page, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They took down Ragsdale 45-28 on Tuesday. The win was some much needed relief for the Pirates as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Page found their leader in sophomore Lola Vanore, who went 10 of 15 on her way to 25 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals. Vanore's evening made it five games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Mason Grainger, who posted three points along with seven assists, five boards, and four steals.

The victory got Page back to even at 4-4. As for Western Guilford, they now have a losing record at 3-4.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Western Guilford has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 24.4 boards per game. However, it's not like Page struggles in that department as they've been averaging 32.1 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.

Western Guilford took a serious blow against Page in their previous meeting back in February, falling 84-55. Can Western Guilford avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
