Softball Game Preview: Grants Pirates vs. Newcomb Skyhawks

Grants has gone a perfect 4-0 against Newcomb recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Pirates will be playing at home against the Skyhawks at 3:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Grants has five straight victories, Newcomb has eight straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Grants proved they can win big on Tuesday (they won by 15) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Valencia, sneaking past 10-8.

Alynn Othole looked comfortable as she didn't allow a single hit and allowed only one earned run over four innings pitched.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Delilah Martinez, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Aubrhyanna Garcia, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.

Meanwhile, Newcomb came up short against Navajo Prep on Thursday, falling 32-5.

Grants pushed their record up to 10-8 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.7 runs over those games. As for Newcomb, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-12.

Grants took their win against Newcomb in their previous matchup back in March of 2022 by a conclusive 18-3 score. Do the Pirates have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Skyhawks turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
