Recap: Mt. Vernon Rams vs. Cairo Pilots
The Mt. Vernon Rams stacked a 12th blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Monday. They blew past Cairo 80-40 on the road. The victory was familiar territory for Mt. Vernon who now have four in a row.
Mt. Vernon's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Tiara Johnson, who scored 24 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Johnson is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 16 games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Melaina Zedalis, who scored 16 points along with seven assists and five steals.
When it comes to explaining why Cairo lost, one person who can't be blamed is Aaliyah Wilkerson. Despite the final result, she scored 19 points. Another player making a difference was Sa'Layah Purdiman, who scored nine points.
Mt. Vernon has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 15 of their last 16 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 19-3 record this season. As for Cairo, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost seven of their last eight games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-14 record this season.
Mt. Vernon will head out on the road to challenge Carterville at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Carterville is on a three-game streak of home wins, Mt. Vernon a 15-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. Cairo won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Central at 5:30 p.m. on January 16th.
