Recap: Lely Trojans vs. Gateway Eagles

The Lely Trojans's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fourth straight loss. They took a 76-65 hit to the loss column at the hands of Gateway. While losing is never fun, Lely can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 494th, while Gateway is ranked 126th).

Gateway had a senior duo take command as Tavian Cook scored 26 points along with seven rebounds and five steals and Tyler Diaz scored 16 points along with six assists and three steals. Cook hasn't dropped below 15points for six straight games. Qur'an Pettyjohn Jr was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with two steals.

Lely bumped their record down to 5-12 with that loss, which was their sixth straight at home. As for Gateway, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 10-2 record this season.

Lely will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Community School of Naples at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Gateway on the road again on Monday and play against Belen Jesuit at 2:30 p.m. on January 15th. Belen Jesuit is coming into the contest hot, having won their last three games.
