Recap: Mitchell Mustangs vs. Weeki Wachee Hornets
After flying high against the Hudson Cobras two weeks ago, the Mitchell Mustangs came back down to earth. Mitchell opened the new year with a less-than-successful 49-36 defeat to Weeki Wachee. Mitchell found out winning isn't easy when you're outrebounded 16 to 6 on offense.
Mitchell's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Priya Jacob, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Kaylana Little who scored seven points along with seven rebounds. Jacob scored a full 36.1% of Mitchell's points, the eighth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Weeki Wachee's win on Thursday was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Marlee Schumacher, who scored 15 points along with eight rebounds and three blocks. Those three blocks set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Joelys Rodriguez, who scored nine points along with seven steals and six rebounds.
Mitchell's defeat dropped their record down to 7-4. As for Weeki Wachee, they pushed their record up to 10-3 with that victory, which was their seventh straight on the road.
Mitchell won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Countryside at 9:06 a.m. on January 5th. Countryside will be looking to extend their current seven-game winning streak. Weeki Wachee won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Neumann at 12:06 p.m. on January 5th.
