Basketball Recap: Florence Comes Up Short

If Florence was feeling good fresh off their 46-15 takedown of Arete Prep last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Florence Gophers took a blow against the Seton Catholic Sentinels on Tuesday, falling 58-25. While losing is never fun, the Gophers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 223rd, while the Sentinels are ranked 73rd).

Seton Catholic was led to victory by Carmella Gallardo and Mia Dipuccio. Gallardo went 8 of 19 on her way to 27 points in addition to eight rebounds and four steals, while Dipuccio dropped a double-double on 18 points and 13 boards. Gallardo's evening made it four games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Esmeralda Lanigan, who posted two points and six boards.

Florence has traveled a rocky road recently having lost eight of their last nine contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-11 record this season. As for Seton Catholic, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 12-4.

Florence has already played their next matchup, a 60-18 defeat against Show Low on the 9th. As for Seton Catholic, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 50-46 loss against Valley Christian on the 10th.
