Basketball Recap: Kai Brookins' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Winthrop College Prep Academy over St. Petersburg

On Saturday, the Winthrop College Prep Academy Spartans ended up a good deal behind the St. Petersburg Green Devils and lost 60-44. While losing is never fun, the Spartans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 349th, while the Green Devils are ranked 129th).

Several Spartans players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Kai Brookins, who posted 11 points. Another player making a difference was Jaiden Martin, who earned nine points.

St. Petersburg found their leader in freshman Nijaun Harris, who went 11 of 23 on his way to 30 points. The match was Harris' 19th in a row with at least ten points. Zak Mellouki also deserves some recognition as he posted his first assist of the season.

Winthrop College Prep Academy's record now sits at 9-11. As for St. Petersburg, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 12-9 record this season.

Winthrop College Prep Academy wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 49-39 loss against Palmetto on the 20th. As for St. Petersburg, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 76-63 win against Lakewood on the 21st.
