Over the course of the past three seasons, Covington Catholic has posted a 43-1 record with three state championship appearances, one Class 5A title and a potential second championship when the Colonels take on Douglass (Lexington) this weekend.
The driving force behind that three-year run is Michael Mayer, a two-way player who ranks as the top tight end in the country and is also one of the best linebackers in the state of Kentucky. In leading Covington Catholic to a 14-0 record this year, Mayer, who has committed to Notre Dame, has been chosen as the Kentucky state Player of the Year presented by Suddenlink by Altice.
