Basketball Recap: Smithsburg Skates Past South Hagerstown with Ease

Smithsburg waltzed into their matchup on Thursday with five straight wins... but they left with six. They took their game with ease, bagging a 62-33 win over the South Hagerstown Rebels. Given the Leopards' advantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 51st, while the Rebels are ranked 229th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Smithsburg was led to victory by Claire Bono and Skyla Mastronardi. Bono dropped a double-double on 16 points and 13 boards, while Mastronardi went 7 of 14 en route to 18 points in addition to five rebounds and four steals. Mastronardi's evening made it four games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Jillian Malott was another key player, putting up 12 points and three steals.

Smithsburg smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

Smithsburg is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 12-2 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.0 points per game. As for South Hagerstown, they are on an eight-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-13.

Smithsburg will have a chance to go back-to-back against South Hagerstown: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled on Friday.
