Baseball Recap: West Union Comes Up Short

If West Union was riding high fresh off their 19-2 takedown of Houlka on Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. West Union fell just short of the North Pontotoc Vikings by a score of 8-7 on Saturday. The Eagles were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Vikings apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

West Union saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Grant Martin, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one double. Those four RBI gave Martin a new career-high. Another was Reed Cooper, who scored two runs while going 1-for-4.

West Union has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-7 record this season. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. With the victory, North Pontotoc broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 7-6.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. West Union will head out to take on Amory at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for North Pontotoc, they will venture away from home to square off against New Albany at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. North Pontotoc's pitchers better be ready for this one: New Albany has averaged an impressive 8.1 runs per game this season.
