Basketball Recap: Chaney Takes a Loss

Chaney has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They were three points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 47-44 heartbreaker at the hands of the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Cowboys came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 162nd, while the Cardinals are ranked 556th).

Despite the defeat, Chaney saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Alyssa Brown dropped a double-double on 17 points and 11 boards. Brown has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Janiah Eiland was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on ten points and nine rebounds.

Even though they lost, Chaney smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 15 offensive boards in three consecutive contests.

Chaney's loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 8-4. As for Cardinal Mooney, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-12.

Chaney has already played their next matchup, a 49-45 victory against Howland on the 18th. As for Cardinal Mooney, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 54-34 defeat against Boardman on the 18th.
