Football Recap: Shukri Hussein Key Part of Team Effort in Cowboys Win

Denver West won the last time they faced Aurora West College Prep Academy and things went their way on Thursday too. The Cowboys enjoyed a cozy 31-12 victory over the Spartans. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Cowboys.

Denver West's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Shukri Hussein led the charge by picking up 89 receiving yards and one touchdown. Hussein also deserves a shoutout for her performance on D, making two total tackles and defending one pass in addition to snagging an interception. Alesha Munoz-Sturgeon made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.

Denver West didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Aurora West College Prep Academy to a completion percentage of just 35.3%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from four players: Hussein, Alejandra Alvarado Escobedo, Munoz-Sturgeon, and Viviana Javier, who each logged one passes deflected. Denver West wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 65%.

Denver West didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Munoz-Sturgeon, Hussein, Javier, and Deniss Ramos-Ramon picked up one apiece. Munoz-Sturgeon got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Denver West's win bumped their record up to 2-0.
