Baseball Game Preview: Beech Grove Hornets vs. Pike Red Devils

The Beech Grove Hornets will venture away from home to face off against the Pike Red Devils at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Beech Grove hasn't scored more than a single run for three games straight, a trend the squad is eager to reverse.

Beech Grove fell victim to Triton Central and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They came up short against the Tigers, falling 10-0.

Beech Grove saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Bishop Moore, who went 2-for-3 with one double.

Meanwhile, Pike fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Lawrence Central on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Bears by a score of 8-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Red Devils have suffered since March 29, 2024.

Lincoln Sigmund made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. Joe Williams also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Beech Grove's defeat dropped their record down to 0-3. As for Pike, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 3-1.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Beech Grove has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Pike struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 13 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Beech Grove came up short against Pike in their previous meeting back in May of 2019, falling 8-3. Can the Hornets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
