Basketball Game Preview: Caston Comets vs. Winamac Warriors

For the first time this season, Caston will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. Having just played yesterday, they will head out on the road to face off against the Winamac Warriors at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

On Friday, Caston beat North White 48-41. The Comets haven't had any issues with the Vikings recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

Meanwhile, everything came up roses for Winamac against North Newton on Tuesday as the team secured a 69-24 victory. Fans of the Warriors have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 20+ points.

Caston better focus on containing Kandace Kroft and Sadie Popejoy as the pair were huge in Winamac's win. Kroft shot 45% from the field on her way to 31 points in addition to seven assists and seven steals, while Popejoy went 6-for-14 to rack up 20 points along with eight rebounds and five assists. That's the most assists Popejoy has posted since back in November of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Marissa Iverson, who had nine points and six boards.

Winamac smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in six consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Winamac's record now sits at 3-0. As for Caston, the win got them back to even at 2-2.

Caston suffered a grim 44-24 defeat to Winamac in their previous meeting back in November of 2024. Can the Comets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
