Volleyball Recap: Higley Knights vs. Gilbert Tigers
After flying high against Skyline last Wednesday, Higley came back down to earth. The Higley Knights took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Gilbert Tigers on Thursday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Knights of the 3-0 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in October of 2021.
The defeat didn't mean the game wasn't competitive: Gilbert scored at least 17 points in every set. The final score came out to 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 26-24.
Higley's loss came despite strong showings from Shelby Sluiter and Lucy Schmidt. Sluiter had 12 digs, while Schmidt had 21 kills, six digs, and four aces. Schmidt is on a roll when it comes to kills, as she's now had nine or more in the last seven games she's played dating back to last season.
Even though they lost, Higley was lethal from the service line and finished the game with 16 aces. That's the most aces they've posted since back in August.
Leading Gilbert to victory were Lucy Arnett and Chloe Beaudoin. Arnett had five digs and four aces, while Beaudoin had 13 digs and three aces.
Higley's loss dropped their record down to 8-7. As for Gilbert, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-5.
Higley will stay at home for another game and welcome Queen Creek at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Gilbert, they will head out to square off against Desert Ridge at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
