League recap: Overton tops Hillsboro to extend winning streak

AAA District 12 recap September 17, 2013

Overton added to the longest winning streak in AAA District 12 this week by beating Hillsboro, 26-23. The victory was the fourth in a row for the team.

Hillwood fell to Father Ryan 52-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Michael Hughes put up the best numbers through the air as the Burros lost to Overton. He finished with 14 completions for 170 yards. Hughes' favorite target this week was Jay King, who caught 5 passes for 44 yards.

Kendall Johnson was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 43 yards on 7 carries as McGavock lost to Franklin. Teammate Cedric Van Dyke added to the ground attack by rushing for 21 yards.

Ben Johnson was a key player and the best on defense this week as the Raiders fell to the Rebels. He racked up 2.0 sacks.

Holt was the best wideout in the league this week as McGavock lost to Franklin. Holt tallied 4 receptions for 40 yards. Bryson Wilkins helped McGavock's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 20 yards.

One of AAA District 12's premier quarterbacks will go head-to-head with its top pass rusher when Hillsboro and Jay Gore's team face off next week. D'Angelo Jones has dominated opposing QBs with a total of 2.5 sacks, while Hughes has 712 passing yards and 5 touchdowns on the season.

As it stands, the Raiders are in second, while Craig Clayton's team is in fourth.

There should be lots of points scored when McGavock and the Burros face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Raiders comes in having scored 76 this season, while Hillsboro has scored 83. McGavock scored 7 points last week as it lost to the Rebels.
