Recap: Spring Creek Spartans vs. Fernley Vaqueros

If the Spring Creek Spartans were riding high off their 53-30 takedown of the Dayton Dust Devils on Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Spring Creek was beaten by Fernley 70-43 on Saturday. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Spring Creek in their matchups with Fernley: they've now lost five in a row.

Spring Creek's loss came despite strong showings from Jaron Johnson and Carson Fisher. Johnson scored eight points along with nine rebounds and three blocks, while Fisher scored ten points. Tucker Johnson was another key contributor, scoring four points.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Fernley to victory, but perhaps none more so than Johnnie Williams, who scored 26 points along with two steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Williams has scored at least a third of Fernley's points. Another player making a difference was Anthony Winters, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds and six assists.

Spring Creek's loss dropped their record down to 13-4. As for Fernley, the victory (which was their ninth in a row) raised their record to 16-2.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Spring Creek and Elko will face off at 7:30 p.m. on January 17th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Nevada (Elko is ranked 29th, while Spring Creek is ranked 32nd). As for Fernley, they will stay at home for another game and welcome Churchill County at 7:30 p.m. on January 17th. Hopefully Churchill County focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 on Friday.
