The
whispers have morphed into loud proclamations – the

The Falcons traveled to Denver East on
Tuesday night and clobbered the perennial-contending Angels 70-49. It
marked the worst loss for East coach Rudy Carey since he took over the
program in 1993.
Marcus Byrd scored 27 points and
Brett Olson added 22 for the Falcons, coached by former Denver Prep League
player and coach Bob Caton. Byrd and Olson each will play at the
University of Denver next season.
Highlands Ranch (9-1) gained separation by outscoring East 15-2 in the second quarter.
HIGHLANDS RANCH GIRLS ARE GOOD TOOMeanwhile,
in
Highlands Ranch, a similar result was unfolding. The host Falcons
earned a small measure of revenge for last season's quarterfinals upset
by eventual champion East by shellacking the Angels 73-35.
San
Diego recruit
Katelyn McDaniel led the way with 21 points for Highlands
Ranch. Boston College-bound center
Deidra Smith was the only East player
in double digits with 13.
58 MORE UNTIL UCONNThe
Holy Family (Broomfield) girls basketball team extended its winning streak to 32
games Tuesday night by outlasting visiting Eaton 66-60. The
upset-minded Reds were within three points in the late going before
the Tigers salted away the game at the free throw line.
The win was No. 302 all time for coach Ron Rossi, who has guided Holy Family to three consecutive Class 3A titles.
"Coach
told us in the locker room that having a close game was good for us to
keep us competitive and keep us hungry," said Tigers guard
Stephanie Giltner, who led all scorers with 21 points.{PAGEBREAK}
TOP PERFORMERS* Dominic Williams, Abraham Lincoln (Denver): The senior scored 33 points Tuesday night to
lead the Lancers to a 78-72 win against Westminster. It was Lincoln's
third straight win and sixth in eight games.
* Derek Vandervelde,
Dakota Ridge: The 6-foot-5 senior is not only a standout receiver. He
scored 24 points on the hardwood Tuesday night, although it wasn't
enough in the Eagles' 60-52 loss to Columbine.
* Aaron Malvern,
Manitou Springs: The junior scored 22 points Tuesday night in the
Mustangs' 84-33 pasting of Ellicott. It was Malvern's highest output
since tallying 23 in the season opener.
* Carlee Lough, Fairview:
The senior scored 18 points as the Knights went to Legacy and upset the
Lightning girls 51-47 on Tuesday. Legacy, the 5A runner up last season,
entered the contest 5-1 with the lone loss to Highlands Ranch.
ON TAP* George Washington (Denver) at Highlands Ranch boys, Friday, 7 p.m.: Another city team
will take aim at the Falcons and hope for a better result. This one will
have extra zest in that Caton formerly coached the Patriots (7-2
through Tuesday).
* Pine Creek (Colorado Springs) at Regis Jesuit (Aurora) girls, Friday, 7
p.m.: This is part of the Regis Holiday Tournament, and will be a
measuring stick for Pine Creek. The Eagles entered Wednesday 8-1, but the
Colorado Springs Metro League squad will be attempting to prove itself
against a perennial contender from the Continental League, the state's
finest.
