Baseball Recap: Cumberland Takes Down Ranked East Providence

Cumberland faced East Providence in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Monday. The Clippers sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-5 win over the Townies. That's more bragging rights for the Clippers, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Cumberland let Tyler Hurteau and Josh Lyon run wild. Hurteau got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI, while Lyon went a perfect 3-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Those three hits gave Lyon a new career-high. Micah Cousineau was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.

Cumberland has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.4 runs over those games. As for East Providence, their loss dropped their record down to 8-3.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Cumberland is set to square off against their familiar foe Mt. Hope at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, East Providence will challenge rival Cranston West at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
