Baseball Preview: Whittier Cardinals vs. California Condors
Whittier is 1-9 against California since May of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. Whittier will challenge California at 3:15 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Whittier took a loss when they played away from home last Monday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Montclair 4-3. The victory was some much needed relief for the Cardinals as it spelled an end to their four-game losing streak.
Adrian Magallanes tossed a big game, tossing six innings while giving up three earned runs off six hits. What's more, he gave up only two walks, the fewest he's had since back in February.
At the plate, Ryan Jimenez was excellent, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Diego Pantoja, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and one RBI.
Whittier kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in February of 2024.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask California). They never let Nogales get on the board and left with a 14-0 win on Monday. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Condors with their most commanding win of the season.
California has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.2 runs over those games. Whittier's record now sits at 6-7.
Whittier might still be hurting after the 14-3 loss they got from California in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can Whittier avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
