Basketball Game Preview: Aquinas Blugolds vs. Luther Knights

Aquinas is 5-0 against Luther since February of 2020 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Monday. The Aquinas Blugolds will take on the Luther Knights at 7:15 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Aquinas comes in on 14 and Luther on five.

Last Friday, Aquinas humbled La Crosse Logan with a 78-18 victory. The Blugolds have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten matches by 21 points or more this season.

Aquinas' success was spearheaded by the efforts of Alaina Elias, who went 7 of 10 on her way to 16 points and eight steals, and Emma Dobbins, who went 5 for 9 en route to 16 points in addition to eight boards and three steals. The dominant performance gave Elias a new career-high in steals. Samantha Davis was another key player, putting up ten points along with eight rebounds and four steals.

Aquinas smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in 13 consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Luther strolled past De Soto with points to spare on Saturday, taking the game 61-43. Given the Knights' advantage in MaxPreps' Wisconsin basketball rankings (they are ranked 101st, while the Pirates are ranked 225th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Aquinas' win was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 15-3. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.6 points per game. As for Luther, their record is now 14-3.

Everything came up roses for Aquinas against Luther in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, as the team secured a 67-29 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Aquinas since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
