Football Recap: Gateway Charter Comes Up Short

Gateway Charter and Somerset Academy - Canyons squared off in some playoff action on Monday, but Gateway Charter had to settle for second. They were beaten by the Cougars 41-0. The defensive woes were uncharacteristic for the Griffins, who until this matchup were averaging 11.17 points allowed.

Gateway Charter's defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged three passes before it was all said and done. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Bella Peed, Maryah Maldonado, and Jazmyn Johnson, who each picked up one interception apiece.

Somerset Academy - Canyons' win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ava Wotipka, who threw for 179 yards and three touchdowns while completing 85.2% of her passes.

Gateway Charter's loss ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 9-3. As for Somerset Academy - Canyons, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 15-3.

Gateway Charter does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Somerset Academy - Canyons, they will be playing at home against David Posnack Jewish Day at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Cougars are on a four-game streak of home wins, the Rams a three-game streak of away wins, meaning someone's leaving a streak behind.
