Softball Game Preview: Morenci Wildcats vs. St. Augustine Catholic Wolves

The Morenci Wildcats will take on the St. Augustine Catholic Wolves at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Morenci has three straight wins, St. Augustine Catholic has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Morenci will bounce into Thursday's contest after beating Benson, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Wildcats put the hurt on the Bobcats with a sharp 21-8 victory on Tuesday. Considering the Wildcats have won ten games by more than nine runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Morenci let Kieralyn Madrigal and Jaliyah Hernandez run wild. Madrigal went 4-for-5 with one home run, four runs, and four RBI, while Hernandez went a perfect 4-for-4 with five runs, four RBI, and two doubles. Those five runs gave Hernandez a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Mayeli Salazar, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and one triple.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Morenci kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 24 hits. They are 12-2 when they post 11 or more hits.

Meanwhile, St. Augustine Catholic came up short against Desert Christian on Tuesday, falling 16-4. That's two games in a row now that the Wolves have lost by exactly 12 runs.

Morenci pushed their record up to 13-11 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for St. Augustine Catholic, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-11.
