League recap: East Union climbs in state rankings

2A Region 1 recap September 10, 2013

East Union scaled the state rankings by moving to 231 from 268 this week, the biggest jump in 2A Region 1. The Urchins climbed the ranks as a result of beating Potts Camp 29-14.

New Site lost to Kossuth 56-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Corbin Scott put up the best numbers in passing as Baldwyn defeated Mooreville. He finished with a total of 15 completions for 195 yards and 3 touchdowns. Scott's favorite target this week was Devonta Gates, who caught 5 passes for 79 yards.

Blake Spurill was the best running back in the league this week. In 17 carries, he ran for 118 yards as East Union lost to South Pontotoc. Teammate Chase Hall added to the ground attack by rushing for 78 yards.

Burns was the best receiver in the league this week as the Mustangs lost to the Cougars. Burns tallied 6 receptions for 103 yards. Austin Byrd helped Mantachie's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 67 yards.

He was 15-21 with 1 interceptions.

Armontie Price made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Bearcats topped the Troopers. The 5-foot-11 freshman.

Dustin Carrell was a passing and rushing force as Mantachie lost to South Pontotoc. He completed 12 passes for 210 yards and 2 touchdowns and also ran for 9 yards.

Lynn Moore's team's Carrell and Byrd have formed a dream team this season, leading 2A Region 1 in both passing and receiving yards. Carrell has thrown for 542 yards this season, while Byrd has 12 catches for 215 yards. Scott Duley's team's Spurill leads the league in rushing yards with 383.

Baldwyn led the league in scoring this week by notching 54 points on Mooreville. Scott in the win.
