2016 NFL Draft: Vernon Hargreaves III was Florida 8A State Defensive Player of the Year

University of Florida defensive back is targeted as a possible pick of his hometown Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Vernon Hargreaves III might find himself headed back to the city where he starred as an elite prep defensive back. Buccaneers fans should know his name soon.

Hargreaves is expected to be the first cornerback off the board. The 5-foot-10, 204-pound junior attended Wharton (Tampa, Fla.), where he was named the Class 8A State Defensive Player of the Year after recording 110 tackles with five interceptions. His teams went 14-9 in his junior and senior seasons combined with two playoff appearances.

An immediate contributor as a freshman at Florida, Hargreaves earned third team all-American honors in his first season and was first team as a sophomore and junior. He intercepted four passes his junior season with 33 tackles.



Although not one of the fastest cornerbacks in the draft (he ran a 4.5-second 40-yard dash), Hargreaves earns a top ranking due to his physical play and his ability to help out on the run and make plays blitzing the quarterback.
