The San Augustine Wolves will challenge the Joaquin Rams at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a three-game winning streak alive.
San Augustine is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They came out on top against Beckville by a score of 43-33.
Max Renfro had an outrageously good game as he threw for 214 yards and a pair of TDs on only 16 passes, and also rushed for 82 yards and one score on only five carries. He got the majority of those rushing yards when he took off on a run that went for an incredible 59 yards. Another player making a difference was D'Adrian Renfro, who gained 91 total yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Joaquin). They simply couldn't be stopped on Friday as they easily beat Elysian Fields 74-21. The Rams pushed the score to 66-14 by the end of the third, a deficit the Yellowjackets had no chance of recovering from.
Joaquin's win came from a few key players San Augustine will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Trenton Runnels, who rushed for 70 yards and four touchdowns. Those 70 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Amarion Wilson, who rushed for 107 yards and one TD on only 11 carries.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Joaquin was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 596 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 159 rushing yards in 18 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.
Joaquin didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. Jacob Gatlin was the real danger to the passing game, picking up two interceptions all by himself.
San Augustine's victory bumped their record up to 10-3. As for Joaquin, their win bumped their record up to 9-4.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. San Augustine has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 154.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Joaquin struggles in that department as they've been averaging 243.7 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
San Augustine beat Joaquin 28-21 when the teams last played back in October. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wolves since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
