Baseball Recap: Monsignor Scanlan Comes Up Short

Monsignor Scanlan had lost seven straight at home, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 3-15 to make it eight. They came up short against the Moore Catholic Mavericks, falling 8-0. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Crusaders of the 9-2 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2022.

As for Moore Catholic, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 12 of their last 13 contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 15-6-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games.

For Moore Catholic's part, JOE CANCEL looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over four innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave CANCEL a new career-high.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on MATTHEW DOYLE, who went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was CHRISTOPHER EUGENE, who got on base in two of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

Looking ahead, Monsignor Scanlan will square off against Iona Prep at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. The Gaels will roll in looking for their ninth straight victory, something the Crusaders surely won't give up without a fight. As for Moore Catholic, they will be playing at home against Monsignor Farrell at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.
